About Miriam Goos
Clay found me when I wasn't looking for it. I sat down at a wheel in Nelson, tried to centre a wet lump of earth, and that was that.
I work across wheel throwing and handbuilding, functional vessels and more sculptural pieces. Form, proportion, surface texture, and colour are what drive the work. My influences run through Scandinavian ceramics and mid-century studio pottery. I'm always working towards that point where a piece feels both resolved and alive: the shape is right, the surface has something to say, nothing needs adding or taking away.
Sharing that knowledge felt like the natural next step. I run wheel throwing and handbuilding classes from my Nelson studio for all levels, and teaching has become as central to my practice as the making itself. There's something particular about watching someone find their footing with clay, the focus it demands, the small breakthroughs, the moment something finally holds its shape. Claybound is my Nelson studio, where I make, where I learn, where I teach.
